Charleston Carter, of Clementon, was sentenced in Atlantic County Superior Court on Thursday, Nov. 18 for third-degree eluding police, according to the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office.

On Nov. 23, 2019, Galloway Township police observed a red Chrysler van in the left turn lane. Police say that both occupants were asleep. Police approached the driver’s side window and the driver, later identified as Carter, opened his eyes.

While being questioned by the officer, Carter put his vehicle in drive, nearly running over the officer, the prosecutor said. The vehicle sped through the intersection crossing four lanes of traffic. The vehicle was located a short time later in the parking lot of the Deluxe Inn. Carter fled the vehicle on foot and was later safely apprehended by K-9 police, the prosecutor said.
